TEACHING PHILOSOPHY | 理念
Nurturing Excellence through Music Education
As a choral conductor, my teaching philosophy revolves around creating a student-centered and non-perfectionist learning environment, embracing vulnerability and student agency in music learning, fostering diversity and inclusion in the classroom, encouraging lifelong ownership of music learning and performance, and educating the whole person through the transformative power of music.
Creating a Student-Centered and Non Perfectionist Learning Environment
First and foremost, I believe in creating a non-perfectionist and judgment-free space where every student feels safe and valued. In this environment, students can freely express themselves, take risks, make mistakes, and grow as musicians and individuals. During rehearsals, I often encourage singers to make loud mistakes in the early stages of the learning process. Because no one is perfect on their first attempt, I want them to expose their weaknesses early on while we have time to work on them. That is why creating a judgment-free space is vital. By promoting acceptance, I aim to inspire diverse talents and backgrounds to form a safe and harmonious space for vulnerability.
Embracing Vulnerability and Student Agency in Music Learning
I encourage my students to embrace vulnerability and actively participate in their musical and personal development. This student-centered approach ensures that learning is deeply personal and emotionally engaging, requiring students to tap into their innermost feelings and express them through their musical performances. I foster an environment where ensemble members unite as a community of musicians, respecting and supporting one another while working collaboratively towards common artistic goals. This setting allows students to explore their creativity and form a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them, enhancing their educational experience and fostering a profound connection with music
Fostering Diversity and Inclusion in the Classroom
Embracing and celebrating diversity is a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy, and my own experiences as a member of a minority have profoundly shaped my approach to creating an inclusive learning environment. I am acutely aware of the unique challenges and perspectives that students from diverse backgrounds bring to the classroom, and I strive to ensure that every individual feels seen, heard, and valued. In my classroom, I actively promote an atmosphere of respect and acceptance, where differences are not just tolerated but celebrated. I integrate diverse musical selections that reflect various cultures and experiences, allowing students to see themselves in the curriculum and connect with music on a personal level. Additionally, I foster open dialogue and encourage students to share their stories and experiences, enriching the entire ensemble's learning experience. By serving as a role model and advocate, I aim to empower students from all backgrounds to embrace their identities, share their unique perspectives, and contribute to a vibrant and inclusive musical community.
Fostering Lifelong Ownership of Music Learning and Performance
As an educator, I am deeply committed to cultivating a profound sense of ownership within my students regarding their musical journey. I encourage them to act actively as singers, decision-makers, and attentive listeners in the rehearsal room. I believe that my role as the conductor should not monopolize the choir's discernment; instead, I aim to impart the skills and wisdom necessary for students to actively engage in listening and singing, enabling them to make well-informed decisions regarding their musical delivery. In the classroom, I endeavor to prepare students to grasp the rich tapestry of musical heritage through meticulous research and score study. Students are encouraged to commit to regular practice, delve into the depths of music history and theory, and engage in reflective self-assessment. I challenge my students to delve deeply into the historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts of the music they study and perform. This exploration takes the form of writing or presentations, allowing them to make historically informed decisions.
Educating the Whole Person through Music
Music is not merely a technical exercise but a profound means of personal and societal transformation. In alignment with Confucius's philosophy, I view education as a vehicle for cultivating individuals who possess cultural refinement and a sense of moral responsibility. Through music, I aim to be an accomplished musician and compassionate, empathetic, cooperative, and socially responsible individual who can positively impact their communities and society. In conclusion, by adhering to these principles and drawing inspiration from the wisdom of Confucius, I aspire to empower my students to become exceptional musicians and virtuous, influential members of society. Through the transformative power of music, we can collectively shape a harmonious, enlightened, and culturally rich world.
